Machine-to-Machine Payments
A machine-to-machine (M2M) payment is a transaction initiated, negotiated, and settled between two automated systems, with no human clicking "confirm" on either side of that specific transaction.
The mechanics are old; the initiator is new
Most of the actual payment rails — card networks, bank transfers, stablecoin settlement — already support automated initiation; recurring subscriptions have worked this way for decades. What's new in the "agent economy" framing is who decides to initiate the payment: previously a scheduled job with fixed terms, now potentially an agent evaluating options and negotiating terms in real time.
Where real M2M activity exists today
- API-metered billing — a service agent calls another paid API on a pay-per-call basis, well-established and not particularly novel.
- Programmatic ad buying — automated systems have bid on ad inventory in real time for over a decade; a mature example of machine-negotiated pricing.
- Emerging agent-to-agent commerce protocols — early-stage standards for one agent to discover, price-check, and pay another agent for a service, still largely experimental as of this writing.
The open problem: verifying the other side is real
In a human transaction, identity fraud is a solved-enough problem via KYC and existing legal recourse. In an M2M transaction, an agent needs a reliable way to verify that the other agent is authorized to act for who it claims to represent, and that recourse exists if the transaction goes wrong. This — not the payment technology itself — is the actual bottleneck holding back autonomous M2M commerce at scale.
