What Is the Agent Economy
The agent economy refers to economic activity carried out by autonomous software agents — programs that can plan, make decisions, and take real-world actions like purchasing, booking, or paying — acting on behalf of a person, a business, or another agent.
What makes an "agent" different from a normal app
A calculator app or a shopping cart is not an agent: it does exactly what a human tells it to, one click at a time. An agent is given a goal ("keep my subscriptions under $50/month," "find and book the cheapest flight that fits these constraints") and works out the steps itself, often across multiple tools and multiple decisions, without a human approving each one.
Why this creates a genuinely new kind of economy
When only humans transact, every purchase has a person deliberately clicking "buy." When agents transact, decisions can happen at machine speed and machine scale — thousands of small, correct decisions a human would never have time to make individually. That shift changes who the "customer" is from a pricing, fraud, and trust perspective: a merchant increasingly has to design for an agent evaluating terms, not a person reading a landing page.
What it is not
It is not a specific cryptocurrency, a single company's product, or a guarantee that "AI will handle your money." Agent economy activity today ranges from simple rule-based automation to genuinely autonomous negotiation, and the two look very different in terms of risk. Treat any claim that agents can "safely handle payments" as a claim about a specific system's guardrails, not a property of AI in general.
